For any professional, especially those in advisory roles such as lawyers and in-house counsel, the ability to understand accounting principles and interpret financial data and reports is critical for them to create value in their respective functions.

Practical Finance for In-House Counsel programme aims to equip participants with practical knowledge of the subject to enable them to effectively take into consideration the financial management and accounting practices of corporates when providing guidance to organisations, and preparing financial covenants.

This includes identifying potential ethical and legal exposures facing a corporation when preparing its financial reports and statements. In the same token, participants will learn to look out for typical issues and nuances from the financial reports and statements of other organisations.

From a day-to-day perspective, the skills and knowledge gained will facilitate better communication and understanding between in-house counsel and other business units.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss general accepted accounting practices and accounting cycle.
  • Summarise how key financial statements, namely balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement are prepared.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basis upon which corporate value is created, sustained and protected.
  • Calculate common ratios for benchmarking and analysing the financial strength of a company.
  • Harness pertinent data and information from financial statements and reports for analysis.
  • Effectively discuss issues of short and long-term financing, and working capital management.
  • Identify financial and investment risk in the context of corporate governance.
  • Understand the key financial elements of a good business plan, in particular how the company prepares its budget.
