Thriving in the Age of AI: Overcoming Overwhelm and Knowing When to Unplug
What does it mean to work mindfully in an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven world?
With fast-evolving developments in the legal and compliance space, leveraging the adoption and use of AI is critical. Just as critical, however, is being positive and mindful about embracing it. It is going to be a key strategic advantage for all in‑house counsel.
Just recently, The Mindful Business Movement was launched at the Singapore Legal Profession Symposium 2025. The Movement aims to eliminate unnecessary stressors, promote work‑life balance, and embed healthier workplace norms.
Paradoxically, while AI is set to enhance and further embellish our work product as lawyers and compliance professionals so as to facilitate a drive towards efficiencies and help reduce burnout in high‑volume advisory environments, there are notable concerns over job security. With the continuous swirl of AI disruptors, the "dehumanising of work" and the pressure of a 24/7 culture within the legal profession. One has to ask - how best can one approach this positively as a legal/compliance professional?
How can one be brave and step forward proactively, not only to stay ahead of the curve, but also to enable faster decision-making and better business alignment? It will be of increasing importance to use this opportunity to focus on high-value work - moving away from repetitive and monotonous tasks to make more time to reflect, be creative, as well as focusing more on your own personal health and welfare. This is not only for yourself - but also to be more "present" for your loved ones.
Have you considered the power of leveraging the "force multiplier effect" to efficiently streamline and handle increased workloads? With the backdrop of an environment of "doing more with less" where could this initiative catapult you to?
This is also a catalyst to evolve into new and exciting roles ancillary to traditional legal roles.
Rapid legal research with AI‑assisted synthesis can be used inter alia for case law and statutes, regulations and scenario planning. It also has an important role to play in leveraging drafting support for contracts, policies, and internal memoranda. AI tools can help organise precedents, internal guidance, and regulatory updates as well as risk spotting flagging up various inconsistencies, missing clauses, and/or compliance gaps. Making one’s day smoother and more manageable by having purposefully smart meetings and communications, avoiding unnecessary and irrelevant meetings, and after‑hours communication - except in the case of an emergency.
Are you able to create personal space and combat a sense of being completely overwhelmed by the tsunami of changes and disruptors raining down on the profession?
Facilitated by Jiezhen Wu (Senior Principal at Korn Ferry), the upcoming SCCA WellFest Wellbeing Wednesday welcomes in-house lawyers and compliance professionals in Singapore to explore how to embrace positivity, thrive in the Age of AI, manage overwhelm, and recognise when to unplug. We will gather in person over lunch on Wednesday, 13 May 2026.
