SCCA’s Student Chapter Debate Spotlights AI Copyright

Participants listen as teams debate the ownership of AI-generated content during SCCA’s GenA2Z event in Singapore
Ownership of AI-generated content took centre stage in a debate at GenA2Z, an annual initiative exploring emerging issues shaping the legal industry, which attracted in-house counsel, creative industry professionals and law students.
The Singapore Corporate Counsel Association (SCCA) and the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) co-organised the event, which Allen & Gledhill supported.
This year’s event explored legal questions surrounding the ownership of AI-generated content.
“Artificial intelligence is transforming both the legal and creative industries, and tomorrow’s lawyers will need to combine legal expertise with commercial thinking, technological awareness and sound judgement,” said Serene Gan, chair of the SCCA Student Chapter.
The debate centred on the motion: This house believes that all AI-generated content should automatically belong to the public domain.
Mentored by in-house counsel and industry advisers, participants debated the ownership of AI-generated content before a panel of judges, examining the legal, commercial and ethical issues raised by generative AI.
The event reflected growing attention among corporate legal departments to the intellectual property, governance and commercial risks created by AI technologies.
