SCCA Mentorship Programme 2027

Four Conversations. One Year. Fresh Perspectives Beyond Your Organisation.

The SCCA Mentorship Programme pairs in-house counsel with experienced members of the profession for a year of structured, confidential conversation about the things that are hardest to work out alone; how to be heard by a board, how to lead a team for the first time, when to move, and what the job actually asks of you as it grows.

The programme is run by the SCCA Academy and is free to SCCA members. Places are limited by the number of mentors available.

How It Works

ApplySeparate forms for mentors and mentees. Five minutes for mentors, ten minutes for mentees.

Applications will close on 30 November 2026.

Get MatchedWe match on what you want to work on, not just on job titles.

If we cannot find you a good match, we will tell you and hold your place for the next intake.

Meet Four TimesYour first conversation happens at the in-person Kick-Off in January 2027.

The other three are yours to arrange: In March or April, June or July, and August or September 2027.

Keep GoingFrom October the relationship is yours. Many pairs carry on.

The four conversations. Each one has a job.

  1. Set the Direction at the Kick-Off.

  2. Work the Problem: One real situation, taken apart properly.

  3. Broaden the Perspective: Strengths, gaps and where your career could actually go.

  4. Review and Close.

Who It Is For

  • Mentees: In-house counsel (up to approximately 5 years of in-house experience) in the earlier stages of their in-house careers, whether you are in your first year or stepping into something larger.

  • Mentors: In-house counsel (at least 10 years of relevant in-house experience) with leadership, regional or specialist responsibility that others would learn from. You are not expected to be a trained coach. You are expected to be honest about what your own career has actually been like.

What You Are Asked to Commit

Four conversations of about an hour, between January and September. Around four hours across the year. We do the matching, the materials and the reminders.

What We Ask of Mentees

That you drive it. You propose the dates, set the agenda and follow up. Mentoring works when the person being mentored is the one steering.

Important Information about the Programme
The SCCA Mentorship Programme is a voluntary professional development initiative. SCCA facilitates the programme by matching participants and providing materials and guidance. SCCA does not supervise, monitor or take part in individual mentoring discussions.

Mentors participate in a personal capacity as volunteers. Their views are their own and are not those of SCCA or of their employers.

Nothing said or done in the course of the programme constitutes legal advice, and no solicitor-client relationship arises between participants. Mentors do not provide employment advice, recruitment services, career placement, counselling or psychological support, and do not act as an advocate for a mentee within the mentee’s organisation.

SCCA reviews applications for eligibility but does not verify the information participants provide about themselves, and does not endorse or warrant the experience, judgement or suitability of any participant. Participants should exercise their own professional judgement in deciding what weight to give to anything discussed.

Participation is at each participant’s own risk. To the fullest extent permitted by law, SCCA accepts no liability for any loss or damage arising out of participation in the programme, including any advice, views or information exchanged between participants, or any decision taken as a result.

SCCA may decline an application, end a mentoring arrangement or remove a participant from the programme at any time and at its discretion.
